Boston Lyric Opera

Brand Identity

CHALLENGE:

Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) was founded in 1976 as the Opera Company of Boston Lyric Theater. The company quickly established itself as a major cultural institution in New England. Known for both traditional productions and innovative stagings, the BLO brand did not match the company’s modern approach to the medium.

STRATEGY:

In rebranding the BLO, Colossus examined the narrative elements of performances like The Marriage of Figaro, A Streetcar Named Desire, William Tell and others. Extracting themes of lust, betrayal, tragedy, triumph, romance and even existential philosophy, we then moved to explore modern parallels in storytelling that might resonate with a younger, more diverse audience.

CREATIVE SOLUTION:

What emerged was a striking similarity between opera and modern cinema- both of which share a deep commitment to emotional storytelling through a fusion of artistic elements. Both worlds blend music, visual design, and performance to create immersive experiences. Centering on human stories, often presented in heightened, sometimes stylized ways.
